About the Artist

Marc Stanes was born in London in 1963. He started photographing natural structures at 14 with a camera borrowed from his father.

A photographer for over 25 years, his commissions have taken him all over the world. His acclaimed 2003 portrait of Nelson Mandela began a long term association with the Mandela Rhodes Foundation and Marc continues to advise and photograph towards the Mandela visual legacy.

His first exhibition in 1994 at the Jonathan Cooper Gallery in London was largely inspired by plants and ideas found in his grandmother’s garden. He has since had numerous group and solo exhibitions in many countries with works in private and public collections. His most recent exhibitions have found him re-examining the earlier connection with nature and the emotions that drive his work.

Marc has lived in South Africa since 2003 and works from a daylight studio he designed.
